A wooden sculpture painted to look like cracked and broken stone with roman numerals carved into it

When I used to work as an artist, I would sometimes make large carved text pieces. My brother, the poet Henk Rossouw sent me a poem by Basil Bunting, which he tought I’d like. I did, and the title of this blog comes from that poem.

The mason stirs:
Words!
Pens are too light.
Take a chisel to write.

Also, the recording at the link above is fantastic.

While I might not be chiselling word into wood anymore, and digital words are the lightest of all, it stands as a reminder to make a mark, carve out the space and put things out into the world.
